How can you set a specific aspect ratio for your images in Midjourney?

An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image.

For example, an aspect ratio of 16:9 is commonly used for high-definition television. In this case, the width of the image or screen is 16 units, and the height is 9 units.

In Midjourney, the default aspect ratio for generated images is 1:1, which results in square-shaped outputs.

However, when crafting visuals for social media posts, posters, or video thumbnails, you may require a different aspect ratio. So, how can you adjust the aspect ratio to fit your needs? Thankfully, it’s quite straightforward!

All you need to do is enter the parameter –aspect <value>:<value> or –ar <value>:<value>. The specific aspect ratio in v5 can be any ratio. However, aspect ratios greater than 2:1 are experimental and may produce unpredictable results.

Older versions of Midjourney only allow more limited values:

  • Version 4c: 1:2 to 2:1
  • Version 4a or 4b: Only: 1:1, 2:3 or 3:2
  • Version 3: 5:2 to 2:5
  • Test / Testp: 3:2 to 2:3
  • niji: 1:2 to 2:1

If you want to try out different options, feel free to experiment with various aspect ratios.

One more thing: You can only use the parameter with whole numbers. An aspect ratio of —ar 1.85:1 is currently not possible in Midjourney.

Here’s a list of the most popular aspect ratios that you can easily copy into your prompt:

–ar 4:3

Commonly used for standard resolutions in television, older computer monitors, and some digital cameras. It works well for various types of photography, such as landscapes, portraits, and everyday snapshots.

–ar 16:9

Commonly used for high-definition television, most computer monitors, and many modern smartphones. It’s an excellent aspect ratio for landscape and panoramic photography, as well as video content.

–ar 21:9

Commonly used for ultra-wide monitors and some movies. Can be great for showcasing landscapes, cityscapes, interiors, or other scenic views.

–ar 3:2

Commonly used for traditional 35mm film and some digital cameras. This aspect ratio is versatile and works well for a wide range of photographic subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and street photography.

–ar 4:5

Commonly used for vertical photos as it fits well with many smartphone screens. It works well for portraits, fashion photography, and product shots.

–ar 9:16

Commonly used for vertical videos and Snapchat snaps. It’s ideal for capturing vertically-oriented scenes and subjects or creating content specifically for mobile devices.
